1 Find a suitable drift (soft metal).
2 Find somewhere solid to
put the stripped wheel on it's side to allow the bearings to drop out.
3 Make sure all the
spacers/shims etc are out and the oil seal and bearings have a clear run
out.
4 Look inside the hub from
the opposite side (through the opposite bearing) and there should be a
couple of cutaways in the hub metal that allows a drift to be used
comfortably on each side of the outer race of the bearing.
5 Carefully drift out the
bearings on the opposite side downward, alternating blows from one side to
the other to keep it square. Once it has moved a few mill the drift can be
moved round the outer race and the whole bearing assembly and oil seal will
come out together dead easy.
6 Insure that a rag or
similar underneath where the bearings will fall out to catch all bits so you
can see what's what.
7 Clean up hub etc ready
for new bearings.
8 Get new bearings (check
that they are correct against old ones!!!!) and place into bearing recess
and using a soft faced hammer tap the outer bearing until 'it bites' now
using either your drift, a suitable sized socket or even a piece of wood get
the bearing started and moving down smoothly making sure it stays square at
all times.
9 Use suitably sized socket
and drive the bearing down until it makes a 'solid' noise and the 'feel' of
the bearing changes as you tap it.....give it a few more taps all round
using your original drift to ensure that it is fully seated.
10 replace all other
shims/seals, spacers etc
